Invitation to Ecma TC53 seminar, Tokyo, 11 December 2019, 10.00-12.00

13.11.2019

Geneva, 13 November 2019

Embedded software development is at a crossroads. Traditional development techniques that have worked so well for decades are now stretched beyond their limits by the demands of the Internet of Things. Many embedded systems creators are looking for new solutions, but there is a lack of acceptable options. On one hand, Linux, and other de-facto standard systems, appeal to software developers but are often prohibitively expensive to deploy in products. On the other hand, silicon manufacturers and independent software developers offer innovative software libraries for low-cost hardware, but these are too often short-lived proprietary solutions limited to a single silicon family.

Ecma International is a leading standards organization that has facilitated the development of many influential standards, including the ECMAScript (aka JavaScript) programming language that powers the web. These standards have driven growth of markets, improvements in interoperability, and efficiencies in software development.

The latest initiative by Ecma International is “ECMAScript Modules for Embedded Systems”. This technical committee (TC53) is working to bring the benefits of modern JavaScript to the development of software for embedded systems. The committee is delivering a suite of standard APIs for building embedded systems. These APIs are designed to be efficient, portable, and secure. Importantly, these standard APIs are vendor neutral, thereby establishing a solid foundation to build products on. This common ground allows silicon manufacturers, cloud service providers, sensor manufacturers, and independent software developers to collaborate with embedded system developers.

This seminar introduces the growing trend of building Internet of Things products in JavaScript. You’ll learn about the current state of the art in developing embedded systems with JavaScript, how it helps you create better products, and how you can begin evaluating that within your organization today. You can help ensure the standard meets your products needs by joining Ecma International to participate in its development.

The seminar features presentations by members of the committee defining the standard and individuals with real-world experience developing embedded systems using JavaScript.

– Patrick Luthi. Ecma Secretary General and Secretary of Technical Committee TC53 on ECMAScript Modules for Embedded Systems
– Peter Hoddie. Chair of TC53 on ECMAScript Modules for Embedded Systems, CEO and Co-founder of Moddable
– Takashi Uehara. CEO of Japan Digital Design exploring the impact of IoT technology on Financial Technology (FinTech)
– Shinya Ishikawa. Independent software developer, author, and maker using embedded JavaScript
– Patrick Soquet. Architect of XS, the most advanced JavaScript engine for embedded systems
– Lizzie Prader. Co-founder of Moddable and leading developer of touchscreen user interfaces for embedded systems

The seminar will take place on 11 December 2019 in Tokyo, Shinagawa (JR-Shinagawa East Building) and is kindly hosted by Hitachi. The attendance to the seminar is open to Ecma members and non-members and is free to attend. However, seats are limited and participants should send an e-mail to helpdesk@dev.ecma-international.org with their full name and affiliation as soon as possible.
